New England Patriots vs. Atlanta Falcons
This year’s Super Bowl brings us two powerhouse offenses with the Atlanta Falcons being the number one point-scoring team in the NFL and the Patriots ranking number three. Matt Ryan and the Falcons have looked great all year long but looked completely unstoppable against Green Bay on Sunday. No quarterback this season has looked as good as Ryan going down the home stretch of the season.
On the other side of the ball we have Tom Brady and the New England Patriots bringing another high-powered offense and a lot of experience to the table. New England ranks third in the NFL for scoring this year, and that sets us up for a showdown between two of the league’s best offenses.
While the offenses look evenly matched, we do see some discrepancies in their defensive strengths. The Falcons defense allowed 25.4 points per game this year for a defensive ranking of 27th in the league. Their offense has done the heavy lifting to get them this far, but the defensive squad will need to step it up a bit to prevent this game from becoming a Ryan-vs-Brady shootout that probably wouldn’t end well for the Falcons.
The Patriots, on the other hand, have the best defense in the league. They gave up just 15.6 points per game during the regular season. All the Patriots need to do is slow down Matt Ryan just enough to let Tom Brady and his third-ranked offense take care of the rest.
One other obstacle Atlanta will need to overcome is a major experience deficit compared to the Patriots. The Falcons have appeared in just one Super Bowl – way back in January, 1999. They lost to to the Denver Broncos that year and haven’t been back since.
Meanwhile, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick have been here six times already and won four Super Bowls together. This weekend will be their seventh appearance. While Super Bowl 51 will be a new experience for the Falcons, this will be business as usual for the Patriots.
Who To Bet On In Super Bowl Games
Those of you who have been betting on the Patriots to win the Super Bowl will be glad to see them open as 3-point favourites. Atlanta may have the best offense of the two, but the Patriots are the more well-rounded team.
That being said, we cannot rely entirely on season-long stats to totally give up on the Falcons and their defense. That young defense has improved significantly over the course of this season. Sunday’s game against Packers showed just how far the Falcons have come on the defensive side of the ball.
In a game that was supposed to be a high-scoring matchup between Aaron Rodgers and Matt Ryan, the Falcons stifled the Packers to provide us with yet another ugly postseason game that was never even close. They kept the Packers scoreless throughout the entire first half to put Green Bay down 24-0 and give Aaron Rodgers his worst first-half deficit of his career. Mind you, this was against a Packers team that had just reeled off eight straight victories.
